Level: not listening

About Microphone Test

Before a call, a stream or a recording it pays to check the microphone works and sounds right. Press Start, allow the microphone and speak. The bar shows the level in real time and a note under it tells you whether the signal is almost silent, quiet, good, very loud or clipping.

The details table names the microphone and shows the sample rate and number of channels it is using. If you have more than one, pick between them in the list. A five second recording plays straight back so you can hear echo, hiss or distortion for yourself. Wear headphones for the playback to avoid a feedback squeal.

How to use Microphone Test

  1. Choose a microphone from the list if you have several.
  2. Press Start the test and allow the microphone.
  3. Speak normally and watch the bar and the message.
  4. Press Record 5 seconds and play it back to listen.

Common uses

  • Finding out why other people cannot hear you

Frequently asked questions

What level should the bar reach?

For normal speech the bar should move well into the middle and not stay at the far right. The message says Good level when the average level suits speech.

The bar does not move. What should I do?

Check that the right microphone is selected, that it is not muted on the cable, headset or system settings, and that the browser has permission.

What does clipping mean?

The sound is louder than the microphone can handle and the tops of the waves are cut off, which sounds harsh. Lower the input level or speak further back.

Why do I hear a squeal on playback?

The microphone is picking up the speakers. Use headphones for the test.

Why are the effects switched off in this test?

Echo reduction and noise suppression are left off so you see the real signal. Calls and recorders may add them on top.
