About Handwriting Practice Sheet Generator
Children practise handwriting best with words they care about, such as their own name, a spelling list or a short sentence, and with guide lines to help keep letters the right height. This generator makes a practice sheet from whatever you type. In tracing mode each line is followed by pale copies to write over, in copying mode by empty guide lines, and blank mode gives plain guide lines for open writing.
The guide lines are a top line, a dashed middle line and a base line, the layout used for early writing in many UK schools, or just the base and top lines for older children. You choose the size, how many lines to write under each model, and whether to use capitals. The letters are drawn in a plain print style, not a joined script, because schools differ on the style they teach. Ask the child's school which letter formation they use and check the model against it. Print the sheet on A4.

Frequently asked questions
What are the three lines for?
The base line is where letters sit. The dashed middle line marks the height of letters such as a, c and e, and the top line the height of tall letters such as b, d and l and of capitals.
Which writing style does it use?
A plain printed style. It does not show joined-up writing, because schools use different styles. Check the formation your child's school teaches.
What size should I choose?
Start with Large for early writers and move to Medium and Small as control improves.
Why are the tracing lines pale?
So that a pencil mark shows clearly over them. A darker pencil than the print works best.
Can I print many names at once?
Yes. Put one name on each line, up to 30 lines. Long lists run on to more pages.
