Spelling Test Maker
Type the week's words, one per line. Each word is read aloud and the learner types it. At the end you see the score and the words to practise.

About Spelling Test Maker
A spelling test is most useful when the learner hears the word, writes it from memory, and then finds out which ones went wrong. This spelling test maker reads each word aloud using the voice on the device, lets the learner hear it again or in a sentence, and keeps the results until the end so that nothing gives the spelling away on the way. At the end it shows the score and the right spelling of any word missed.
Type the week's spelling list, one word on each line, and add a sentence after a vertical bar for words with a homophone, such as there and their. Answers are checked letter for letter, ignoring capitals and extra spaces. If you would rather test on paper, print a numbered sheet with lines for the answers, plus a teacher copy with the words and sentences. The voices on offer depend on the equipment, and a British English voice is picked first where there is one.

Frequently asked questions
Why can I not hear the word?
Reading aloud depends on the device having a voice installed. If there is none, tick Show each word on screen so the learner can still practise, or print a paper test and read the words yourself.
How are the answers checked?
Letter for letter, ignoring capital letters and spaces at the start and end. A curly apostrophe counts the same as a straight one.
Can the test read a sentence?
Yes. Write the word, then a vertical bar, then the sentence. The Hear it in a sentence button reads the sentence, which helps with words that sound the same.
How many words can I use?
Up to 100 in a test. Around 10 to 20 is usual.
Are the words I enter stored?
No. They stay on the page and are gone when you leave it, so keep a copy of your list.
