About UK Bank Holidays
Bank holidays in the UK differ between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Some are shared, such as New Year's Day, Good Friday, the early May and spring bank holidays and Christmas Day. Others belong to one nation, like the 2nd January and St Andrew's Day in Scotland, and St Patrick's Day and the Battle of the Boyne in Northern Ireland. When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday is normally given, as with Boxing Day in 2026. Choose your region and year to see the list.
The dates on this page were copied from the GOV.UK bank holidays list and last checked on 18 October 2026. Each shows its weekday and a note where it is a substitute day. You also see the number of days until the next one. There is no general right to time off on a bank holiday: whether you get the day off, or get extra pay for working it, depends on your contract. The holiday pay calculator can help work out what you are owed.

Frequently asked questions
How many bank holidays are there in England in 2026?
There are eight in England and Wales in 2026: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May and spring bank holidays, the summer bank holiday, Christmas Day and a Boxing Day substitute on 28 December.
Why are Scotland's bank holidays different?
Scotland has its own bank holidays, set by the Scottish Government, including 2nd January, St Andrew's Day and a different summer holiday in August. Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland.
What is a substitute day?
When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, another weekday is named as the bank holiday so that people have a day off in its place.
Do employers have to give bank holidays off?
There is no automatic right to the day off. It depends on the contract, and the days can count towards the statutory 5.6 weeks of leave if the employer says so.
Where do these dates come from?
They are copied from GOV.UK, www.gov.uk/bank-holidays, checked on 18 October 2026. New dates can be announced, so check there for the latest.
