About Easter Date Calculator
Easter is not on a fixed date. It is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox, which the church fixes as 21 March, so it can fall anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. Enter a year and this calculator gives the date of Easter Sunday for the Western churches, and the date for the Orthodox churches, which use the older Julian calendar and are often a week or more later.
A lot of the calendar depends on Easter. Ash Wednesday is 46 days before, Mothering Sunday three weeks before, Palm Sunday a week before, Good Friday two days before, Easter Monday one day after, Ascension Day 39 days after and Whit Sunday 49 days after. They are all listed, together with a table for the next ten years. The calculation uses the church rules rather than the real moon, so it matches the dates printed in diaries and in the bank holiday lists.

Frequently asked questions
When is Easter in 2026?
Easter Sunday 2026 is on 5 April. Good Friday is 3 April and Easter Monday is 6 April.
Why does Easter move?
It depends on the moon and the equinox. It is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, so it can be as early as 22 March or as late as 25 April.
Why is Orthodox Easter often later?
Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar to find the date, which is 13 days behind. The result is the same day as Western Easter in some years, as in 2025, and up to five weeks later in others.
Is this the real full moon?
No. It uses the church tables, which are a fixed rule, so the date can differ from the astronomical full moon by a day or so. It is the date used by churches and in calendars.
Why does it stop at 1583?
The Gregorian rules that this uses were introduced in 1582 and were adopted in Britain in 1752. Earlier years need different rules.
