Social Post Character Checker

Type or paste your post. See how much of each network's limit it uses, how many characters are left, and the hashtag count for networks that cap them.

Limits are the commonly published ones as checked in October 2026. Networks change them, and some do not publish them, so check before you rely on an exact figure.

About Social Post Character Checker

Every social network limits how long a post can be, and they do not all count characters the same way. Some count every web address as a fixed length however long it is, and some count an emoji or a character from outside the Latin alphabet as two. A post that looks short enough in your editor can be cut off, or refused, when you send it.

This checker counts your text against nine common limits, named by kind of network rather than by company: a short post network, a professional network post, a photo network caption, a large social network post, a text thread network post, an open network post, a federated network post and the title and description of a video site. For the short post network it applies the web address and emoji counting rules, and for the photo network it counts hashtags against the cap of 30. A bar shows how full each limit is, and you can add a limit of your own.

How to use Social Post Character Checker

  1. Type or paste your post into the box.
  2. Look down the table for any network where you are over the limit.
  3. Trim the text or move extra detail into a reply, link or comment.
  4. Add your own limit in the second box if you are working to a different rule.

Frequently asked questions

How are the limits chosen?

They are the commonly published limits as checked in October 2026. Networks change them, and some do not publish exact figures, so check the network itself before you depend on a number close to the edge.

Why does a web address count as 23 characters?

The short post network replaces every address with a fixed length, so a very long link costs no more than a short one. The checker applies that rule to anything starting with http, https or www.

Why do emoji count as two?

On the short post network, characters outside the common Latin ranges, including emoji and many other alphabets, count double. Other networks count them as one.

What is the hashtag limit?

The photo network allows up to 30 hashtags on a caption. The table shows how many your text has. Other networks do not cap them in the same way, but fewer, relevant tags usually read better.

Can I use it for something other than posts?

Yes. The custom limit lets you check any text against a figure of your choosing, such as a banner or an advert headline.
