About Scrabble Word Score Calculator

Working out what a word is worth in Scrabble means adding up the tile values, then applying whichever bonus squares the tiles cover. This calculator does it for you. Type the word, then for each letter pick the square it lands on: plain, double letter, triple letter, double word or triple word. Tick Blank for a blank tile, which scores nothing, and the score updates immediately.

The order of the sum matters. Letter squares multiply the letter on them first, then the letters are added up, and then any word squares multiply the whole total. If a word crosses two word squares the multipliers combine, so a double word and a triple word make the score six times bigger. Playing all seven tiles from your rack earns a 50 point bonus, and any extra words your move creates are added at the end.

Frequently asked questions

What are the letter values in Scrabble?

In English: 1 point for A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T and R. 2 for D and G. 3 for B, C, M and P. 4 for F, H, V, W and Y. 5 for K. 8 for J and X. 10 for Q and Z. Blanks are 0.

In what order do the multipliers apply?

Letter squares apply to their own letter first. Then the letters are added up and word squares multiply the total. Two word squares in one word multiply together.

How much is QUIZ worth with no bonus squares?

22 points: Q is 10, U is 1, I is 1 and Z is 10. Put Z on a triple letter square and it is 42.

What is the bonus for using all seven tiles?

50 points, added after the word multipliers, for playing all seven tiles from your rack in one turn.

Do bonus squares count for tiles already on the board?

No. A bonus square counts only on the turn when a tile is first placed on it. Letters already on the board score their face value.
