About Lawn Turf and Grass Seed Calculator

A lawn calculator tells you how much turf or grass seed to buy. Enter the size of the lawn as a rectangle, a circle or an area in square metres, choose turf or seed, and it does the sum. For turf you get the rolls and the pallets. For seed you get the weight and the number of boxes for a new lawn, a lawn that gets heavy wear, or an overseed of a thin one.

Turf is sold in rolls of about one square metre and pallets of 50 square metres or more, and it deteriorates within a day or two of being cut, so order for the day you lay it. Seed is cheaper but takes longer and needs careful watering. A new lawn is normally sown at about 35 grams a square metre, 50 for heavy use and about 20 for overseeding, though the rate on your box is the one to follow.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of turf do I need for 50 square metres?

With 5% extra for cutting and waste you need 52.5 square metres, which is 53 rolls of one square metre. That is two pallets of 50 square metres.

How much grass seed do I need for 100 square metres?

At 35 grams a square metre, 100 square metres needs 3.5 kg, and with 5% extra about 3.7 kg, so four 1 kg boxes.

When should I sow or lay turf?

Autumn and spring are best, when the soil is warm and damp. Turf can go down in most of the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and you can water it.

Is turf or seed cheaper?

Seed costs much less for the same area, but takes weeks to establish, can be washed away or eaten by birds, and the lawn cannot be used for some time. Turf gives an instant lawn.

How much should I overseed a lawn?

About 15 to 25 grams a square metre after scarifying and aerating, so 20 is the figure used here. Follow the instructions on your seed.
