About Square Metre Calculator for Rooms

A square metre calculator adds up the area of as many rooms as you like. Enter the length and width of each room and the total appears in square metres, square feet and square yards, which are the three units used when flooring, carpet and property are priced in the UK. It is the quickest way to find the total for a whole floor before you order.

You can mark an area as taken off, for a fitted wardrobe or a hearth that will not be covered. The distance around the rooms you have added is shown too, which helps you work out skirting boards and gripper rods. Split an L shaped room into two rectangles and add each one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square metres?

Multiply the length by the width, both in metres. A room 5 m by 4 m is 20 square metres. For several rooms add the areas together.

How many square feet are in a square metre?

There are 10.764 square feet in a square metre, so 28.5 square metres is about 306.8 square feet.

How do I measure an L shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles, measure each and add them. Or measure the whole thing as one big rectangle, and take off the missing corner.

How much extra should I buy?

Add 5% to 10% for flooring and tiles to allow for cuts and waste, and more for patterned or diagonal layouts.

What is a square yard?

It is a square 3 feet or 0.9144 m on each side, or 0.836 square metres. Carpet is still often priced per square yard in the UK.
