About French, Spanish and German Numbers
Numbers are among the first things taught in a new language and among the easiest to get wrong. French counts in twenties from 70, so soixante-dix is sixty-ten and quatre-vingts is four twenties. Spanish changes uno to un before a noun and writes 16 to 29 as one word. German says the units before the tens, so 21 is einundzwanzig, one and twenty. This tool applies those rules to any number you type, up to 999,999,999.
The French is the form used in France, with a hyphen between the parts and et in 21, 31, 41, 51, 61 and 71. Vingt and cent take an s only at the very end of a number, so 80 is quatre-vingts but 81 is quatre-vingt-un, and 200 is deux cents but 201 is deux cent un. The Spanish uses cien on its own and ciento before more digits, and shortens uno and veintiuno before mil and millones. The German writes numbers below a million as one long word. Use it to check homework or to practise saying dates, prices and phone numbers aloud.

Frequently asked questions
Why is 80 quatre-vingts in French?
French uses a base of twenty for 80 to 99. Quatre-vingts is four twenties. The s is dropped when another number follows, so 81 is quatre-vingt-un.
Do Belgium and Switzerland say it differently?
Yes. Belgian and Swiss French say septante for 70 and nonante for 90, and Swiss French often says huitante for 80. This tool gives the form used in France.
Why does Spanish have un and uno?
Uno is used on its own, but before a masculine noun it shortens to un, so we say veintiún euros but veintiuno on its own. In thousands and millions the tool uses the short form, as in veintiún mil.
Why is German written as one word?
German writes a number below a million as one word. Above that, millions are written as separate words, as in eine Million zweihunderttausend.
How do I say a year?
In French and Spanish a year is said as a full number: mil novecientos ochenta y cuatro. In German, years are usually said in hundreds, as in neunzehnhundertvierundachtzig for 1984, while this tool writes the full number, eintausendneunhundertvierundachtzig.
