Fraction Wall Generator

Choose the rows, from wholes to twelfths. Type a fraction such as 2/3 to colour it in every row where it can be shown exactly.

Rows to include

Worked examples

One half

1/2

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10 = 6/12

The rows used were halves, quarters, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths.

Two thirds

2/3

2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12

With ninths ticked, 6/9 is added.

About Fraction Wall Generator

A fraction wall is a stack of bars of equal length, each one cut into a different number of equal parts. Put the whole at the top, then halves, thirds, quarters and so on below, and you can see at a glance that one half is the same size as two quarters, three sixths and six twelfths. It is one of the most useful classroom pictures for fractions, from Year 2 upwards.

This generator draws the wall to scale so that the edges line up exactly. You choose which rows to include, so that a class that has only met halves, quarters and eighths does not see anything else. If you type a fraction such as 2/3 into the highlight box, the wall colours it in every row where it can be shown exactly and lists the equivalent fractions, for example 2/3 = 4/6 = 6/9 = 8/12. Print it or save it as an image file.

How to use Fraction Wall Generator

  1. Tick the rows you want, from the whole (1) to twelfths.
  2. Choose whether to show the labels, or turn them off for a worksheet.
  3. Type a fraction in the highlight box, such as 3/4, to see where it lines up.
  4. Print the wall or save it as an image file.

Common uses

Frequently asked questions

What is an equivalent fraction?

Equivalent fractions are different ways of writing the same amount. 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 are all equivalent, and on the wall their bars end at exactly the same place.

Why is there no row for sevenths?

You can tick the ones you want. Rows are limited to wholes up to twelfths, and the default leaves out sevenths, ninths and elevenths, which do not line up with the others.

How do I compare two fractions with the wall?

Find both fractions on the wall and see which bar reaches further. 3/5 reaches past 1/2, but not as far as 2/3.

What if a fraction cannot be shown?

The tool says so. For example 1/5 cannot be shown in a row of quarters, so add a row for fifths or tenths.

Can I print it for a worksheet?

Yes. Untick Show the labels to print a blank wall for children to label themselves.
