About Excel to CSV Converter

A workbook holds formatting, formulas and several sheets, none of which belong in a plain data file. Many systems want a CSV. This converter opens an .xlsx workbook, lets you pick the sheet, shows a preview and saves the values as a CSV, a tab separated file or a file with another separator.

Text is written as text, numbers as the number the cell holds, TRUE and FALSE as they appear, and dates as yyyy-mm-dd, with the time added where the cell has one. Cells with formulas give the last value the workbook stored. Both the 1900 and 1904 date systems are understood, and numbers are written to 15 significant digits, as a spreadsheet displays them, so a value like 0.1 plus 0.2 comes out as 0.3 rather than a long string of digits.

Frequently asked questions

Can it open old .xls files?

No, only the newer .xlsx format. Open an old file in the program that made it and save it as .xlsx or as CSV first.

What happens to formulas?

You get the value the workbook last stored for the formula. If the file was made by a program that does not store results, formula cells may be blank.

How are dates written?

As yyyy-mm-dd, for example 2024-03-05. A date with a time is written as 2024-03-05 14:30:00. Cells formatted as dates are recognised by their format.

What about hidden sheets, formatting and merged cells?

Only values are saved. Colours, widths and merged cell formatting are not carried across. Merged cells show their value in the top left cell only; the fill blank cells tool can copy it down.

Are there limits on size?

The file is read in your computer's memory, so very large workbooks of several hundred thousand rows may be slow. Files of tens of thousands of rows are quick.
