About CSV to Excel Converter

Opening a CSV directly in a spreadsheet program leaves the decisions to the program. It guesses which cells are numbers, drops the zeros from the front of codes and telephone numbers, can turn a reference into a date, and shows long numbers in scientific notation. This converter builds a proper Excel workbook (.xlsx) and makes those choices in a sensible way instead.

Plain numbers are stored as numbers, so they can be added up. Dates are stored as real dates with a date format, so they can be sorted and calculated with. Everything else is stored as text, so a code such as 007, a telephone number or a reference with letters is never altered. The header row can be bold and frozen so it stays in view, with filter buttons, and columns are sized to fit their contents.

How to use CSV to Excel Converter

  3. Tick the options you want: numbers as numbers, bold header, frozen header, filter buttons and fitted widths.

Frequently asked questions

Which values become numbers?

Plain numbers such as 12, -3.5 and 0.25 with up to 15 digits. Values with leading zeros, letters, symbols or more than 15 digits stay as text so they are not changed.

Which values become dates?

Values that read as dates, such as 2024-03-05, 05/03/2024 or 5 Mar 2024, when you choose a date order. They are stored as dates and shown in the form yyyy-mm-dd. Dates before 1900 are kept as text.

Will text that starts with an equals sign run as a formula?

No. Such values are stored as text, so a cell holding =1+1 shows exactly that and nothing is calculated.

How big can the workbook be?

A worksheet holds up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, and a cell up to 32,767 characters. Longer cells are cut and you are told.

Can I convert the other way?

Yes. The Excel to CSV converter opens a workbook and saves any sheet as a CSV.
