About CSV Splitter

A file that is too big to open, too long to import or too sensitive to send to everyone needs cutting up. This splitter makes smaller files three ways. By rows gives files of a fixed length, such as 1,000 rows each. By number of files shares the rows out as evenly as possible, so a list of 103 rows split into 4 files has 26, 26, 26 and 25 rows. By column makes one file for each different value, so a sales list becomes one file for each region.

The header row is repeated at the top of every file, so each can be opened and imported on its own. File names are built from the name of your file and the number or value, with characters that file names cannot hold replaced. You can download any one file or all of them together in a zip file. The most that is made at one time is 500 files.

How to use CSV Splitter

  1. Paste your CSV or open a file.
  2. Choose how to split: rows in each file, number of files or the values in a column.
  3. Enter the number, or choose the column.
  4. Download the files one at a time, or press Download all as a zip file.

Common uses

  • Cutting a huge export into pieces a spreadsheet can open
  • Sending each region or department only its own rows
  • Staying within an import limit of a set number of rows
  • Sharing a list between several people

Frequently asked questions

Is the header repeated in every file?

Yes, if the first row of your file is a header. Every part starts with the same header row so it can be used on its own.

How are rows shared out when they do not divide evenly?

When you ask for a number of files, the first files get one extra row each until the remainder is used up. Splitting 10 rows into 3 files gives 4, 3 and 3.

What are the files called?

Your file name, a dash and either a number or the column value, for example sales-North.csv. Characters such as slashes and colons are replaced with underscores, and repeated names get a number added.

Are capital letters in the column treated as different values?

Yes, unless you tick the box to ignore them. With it ticked, North and north go to the same file.

What is the limit?

The tool makes up to 500 files at once. If your choice would make more, you are asked to use a larger number of rows in each file or a different column.
