About Add Header and Footer to PDF

A header or footer turns a plain PDF into a document that looks finished. It can carry a title, a draft marker, a confidentiality note, the date or the page number. This tool lets you put text in any of six places: left, centre and right along the top, and left, centre and right along the bottom.

The text can include markers that are filled in on every page: {page} is the page number, {pages} is the total number of pages, {date} is today's date and {file} is the name of the file without .pdf. The default footer is {page} of {pages}, which gives 3 of 12 on the third page of a twelve page file. You can start on a later page, so a cover page has no number, and number the first page as any value you like. Choose the text size, colour and distance from the edge. Letters outside the usual Western alphabet are shown as question marks, because the built in typeface cannot draw them.

Frequently asked questions

What do the markers do?

Write {page} for the page number, {pages} for the total, {date} for today's date and {file} for the file name. They are replaced separately on every page.

How do I leave the cover page without a number?

Set Start on page to 2 and Number the first page as to 1. The cover is left alone and page 2 is numbered 1.

Are my existing pages changed?

No. The text is added on top of the page content. Links, form fields and the original text stay as they were.

Does it work on turned pages?

Yes. The text is placed along the edges as you see the page and is written the right way up whatever turn is stored in the file.

Why do some letters show as question marks?

The built in typeface covers the usual Western letters, numbers and symbols such as the pound sign. Other alphabets cannot be drawn, so they are replaced.
