About Add Border to Image

A border gives a picture a finished look, like a print with a mount. This tool adds padding, which is empty space around the picture, and a border, which is a line around the outside of the padding. Set either one or both, choose the colours and the new picture is drawn straight away with its exact size shown.

There is also a "Make it square" option that adds space to the short sides until the canvas is square. That is handy when a site shows profile pictures or posts as squares and would otherwise crop your photo. Padding can be left clear so it stays see-through when you save as PNG or WebP.

How to use Add Border to Image

  1. Choose a picture.
  2. Enter the padding and border width in pixels and pick their colours.
  3. Tick "Make it square" or "Clear padding" if you need them.
  4. Choose a file type and press Download.

Common uses

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between padding and a border?

Padding is the space between the picture and its frame, in its own colour. The border is the coloured line outside the padding. Use padding for a mount effect and the border for an outline.

How do I make a picture square without cropping?

Tick "Make it square". The short sides get extra space in the padding colour so the whole picture stays visible.

Can the padding be see-through?

Yes. Tick "Clear padding" and save as PNG or WebP. JPG cannot store transparency and will fill it with the background colour.

Does the picture itself get resized?

No. The original picture is placed in the middle at its own size, and the canvas grows around it.

How big can the result be?

Up to 100 megapixels. The page tells you the exact new size as you change the numbers.
