UTF-8 Byte Counter について

This counter shows how many bytes your text takes. Paste text and you see the number of characters, the size in UTF-8 and in UTF-16, the number of lines and how many text messages it would need.

Characters and bytes are not the same. In UTF-8, plain English letters take one byte, accented letters take two, most Asian scripts take three and emoji take four. Databases, interfaces and file formats often set limits in bytes, so a short piece of text can be longer than it looks.

UTF-8 Byte Counter の使い方

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Read the characters, bytes and lines.
  3. Check the text message count if you are writing an SMS.

主な使いみち

  • Staying within a byte limit on a database field
  • Checking a payload size for an API
  • Seeing whether a message fits in one text
  • Understanding why accented text is longer in bytes

よくあるご質問

Why are bytes different from characters?

UTF-8 uses between one and four bytes for each character. Plain English letters use one, but accents, symbols and emoji use more.

What is the difference between UTF-8 and UTF-16?

UTF-8 uses one to four bytes a character. UTF-16 uses two bytes for most characters and four for emoji and rarer ones. Different systems use each.

How many characters fit in one text message?

160 in the standard alphabet. If any character is outside it, such as an emoji, the limit drops to 70. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67.

How are emoji counted?

As one character each, but they take four bytes in UTF-8.
