About Swim Pace Calculator

Swim pace is normally quoted as the time for 100 metres, or 100 yards in a pool measured in yards. Divide your total time by the number of 100s you covered. For example 1,500 metres in 27 minutes 30 seconds is 1 minute 50 seconds per 100 metres. Knowing your pace lets you set targets for each length and compare sessions.

Enter a distance and time to get a pace, or a pace and distance to get a finish time. The page converts between metres and yards, shows a table of times for common swim distances at your pace, and, if you give your pool length, the time for each length. Open water, turns and equipment all change real times, so use pool times for pool pace. It is an estimate and not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate swim pace per 100 metres?

Divide your time in seconds by the distance in metres and multiply by 100. For 1,500 metres in 1,650 seconds that is 110 seconds, or 1:50 per 100 metres.

How do I convert pace per 100 yards to 100 metres?

A yard is 0.9144 metres, so 100 metres is longer than 100 yards. A pace of 1:40 per 100 yards is about 1:49 per 100 metres. The page shows both.

What is a good swim pace?

It varies a lot. Many fitness swimmers cover 100 metres in 1:45 to 2:30. Compare your own sessions over time rather than with others.

How do I find my time for one length?

Multiply the pace per 100 by the pool length and divide by 100. At 1:50 per 100 a 25 metre length takes 27.5 seconds.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is an estimate and not medical advice. Swim where there is a lifeguard if you can, and speak to your GP before starting hard exercise if you have a health condition.
