About Sunrise and Sunset Calculator

When the sun rises and sets depends on where you are and the time of year. Choose a UK city or type a latitude and longitude, pick a date, and this calculator shows sunrise, sunset, solar noon, day length, and the times of first and last light. Results can be shown in your own time zone, in UK time or in UTC, and the page tells you if the sun does not rise or set on that day.

It uses the standard solar position equations. These work out the angle of the sun for the place and date and then find when it crosses the horizon, allowing for the bending of light by the air. Results agree with published tables to within about a minute for most places. First and last light mark civil twilight, when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon and it is bright enough to work outdoors. Hills, tall buildings and the weather change what you actually see.

Frequently asked questions

When is sunrise in London on the longest day?

What is solar noon?

It is the time the sun is highest in the sky. It is not always at 12:00 because of your position within the time zone and a small yearly variation called the equation of time.
