About Steps to Distance Calculator

How far is 10,000 steps? It depends on how long your step is. A common rule of thumb puts a walking step at about 0.415 times your height for men and 0.413 times for women. A man 175 cm tall has a step of about 73 cm, so 10,000 steps comes to roughly 7.3 km, or 4.5 miles. A shorter person covers less ground for the same count.

Enter your steps and your height and the page returns the distance in kilometres and miles. You can also type a stride length you have measured, or switch the other way and enter a distance, such as a 5 km walk, to see about how many steps it takes. A table shows 5,000 to 15,000 steps. Running steps are longer than walking steps. It is an estimate and not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

For a 175 cm man it is about 2,200 steps in a mile. Shorter people take more steps and taller people take fewer. The page shows the figure for your height.

How is step length worked out?

It is estimated as 0.415 times your height for men and 0.413 times for women. These are rule-of-thumb figures. For a better answer, walk 10 steps normally, measure the distance and divide by 10.

Is 10,000 steps a fixed target?

It is a popular goal, not a medical rule. Any extra walking helps most people. The NHS physical activity guidelines are based on minutes of activity each week.

Do running steps match walking steps?

No. Running strides are longer. If you are converting running steps, measure your own stride and enter it.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is an estimate and not medical advice. Speak to your GP about the right level of activity for you.
