Split Text
Cut a long piece of text into equal parts for posts, messages or fields with a limit, or split it wherever a chosen character appears.
Worked examples
Parts of 20 characters

Words stay whole, so parts can be a little under 20 characters.

The last part holds what is left.
About Split Text
Some places only take so much text: a post with a character limit, a message that has to fit in several texts, a form field with a maximum, a translation tool that stops after a few thousand characters. Cutting a long piece into parts by hand means counting characters, and a miscount cuts a word in half. This tool splits the text for you, in parts of the size you choose.
Choose to split by a number of characters, a number of words, a number of lines, or at a separator such as a semicolon. Splitting by characters can keep words whole, and can number the parts, such as (2/5), while leaving room for the numbers so every part still fits the limit. Letters, accents and emoji each count as one character, and an emoji is never cut in half. The parts are shown with a blank line, a line of dashes or a new line between them.
How to use Split Text
- Paste the long text into the box.
- Choose how to split it: by characters, words, lines or a separator.
- Set the size of each part, or the separator, and tick the options for whole words and part numbers.
- Copy the parts, or copy them one at a time from the result.
Common uses
- Splitting a long message into a numbered thread of posts
- Cutting a script or article into chunks for a tool with an input limit
- Breaking a list of lines into batches of 50 for sending in groups
- Turning one line of values separated by semicolons into a list
Frequently asked questions
Does it cut words in half?
Not by default. Parts are broken at the last space that fits. Only a single word longer than the whole part is cut. Untick the option to cut at exactly the number of characters.
How are characters counted?
The way people see them. A letter with an accent, a Chinese character and an emoji each count as one, and a family or flag emoji made of several pieces is never split.
Will the part numbers fit inside my limit?
Yes. When numbering is on, the room for a suffix such as (12/12) is reserved before splitting, so each part including its number stays within the size you set.
Are spaces removed?
When words are kept whole, spaces at the ends of each part are trimmed. Spaces inside a part are kept as typed.
