About Line Formatter

A list rarely arrives in the shape you need. A column of names has to go into code with quotes and commas, a list of page names needs a web address in front of each one, or a rough set of notes needs bullets before it goes into an email. Doing that by hand means editing every line, and a single missed line spoils the whole thing. The line formatter applies the same change to every line at once and leaves everything else exactly as you typed it.

There are four jobs on one page. Add text to the start and the end of each line. Add quotes in five styles, with an optional comma after each line, or take quotes off again. Add bullets, ticks, boxes, numbers, letters or roman numerals, or remove the markers from a list you pasted. Or remove the empty lines, optionally keeping one gap between blocks. Pick the job, set the options and copy the result.

How to use Line Formatter

  1. Paste your list into the box, one item on each line.
  2. Choose what you want to do from the first menu. The options below it change to match.
  3. Fill in the options, such as the text for the start and end, the quote style or the bullet. The result updates as you type.
  4. Press Copy, or use the result as the new input to carry on with another step.

Common uses

  • Putting quotes and commas around names to paste into a spreadsheet formula or a query
  • Adding a web address or a folder path to the front of a list of file names
  • Turning rough notes into a numbered or bulleted list for an email or a document
  • Clearing the empty lines out of text pasted from a PDF or a web page

Frequently asked questions

Does it change the lines themselves?

No. Each line is kept exactly as typed, including accents and emoji. Only the text you ask for is added at the start or end, or the quotes, markers or empty lines you ask to be removed.

Can I put the line number in the added text?

Yes. Type {n} in the start or end text and it is replaced with the number of that line, so a start of "Item {n}: " gives Item 1:, Item 2: and so on. Type \t for a tab.

How do I take quotes or numbering off a list?

Choose add or remove quotes, or add or remove bullets and numbers, and pick the remove option. Matching quote pairs at the two ends of a line are taken off, and bullets, ticks, boxes and numbers such as 1. or (2) are taken off the start while indentation stays.

What happens to empty lines when I add bullets or quotes?

They are left empty, and numbering carries on without a gap, so a numbered list with a blank line between two items still reads 1, 2, 3.
