About Hours to Decimal Calculator

Payroll systems, invoices and time recording tools often want hours as a decimal. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45, because the part after the point is a share of an hour: the minutes divided by 60. Fifteen minutes is 0.25, thirty minutes is 0.5, and twenty minutes is 0.33 when rounded to two places. Multiply the decimal hours by an hourly rate to get the pay or the amount to bill.

Type one time per line, such as 7:45, 8h 20m or 45m, and the calculator converts each one and adds them up, so a whole week of timesheet lines can be done at once. The total is worked out from exact seconds and rounded only at the end, which avoids the small errors you get from rounding each day. Switch the direction to turn decimal hours such as 7.2 back into hours and minutes (7:12). A short table lists common minutes as decimals.
