Worked examples
Icons from a square logo
A 512 by 512 pixel square logo uploaded
favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, favicon-48x48.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 by 180 pixels), and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installed web apps.
Each size is made from the same logo, so keep the artwork simple enough to read at 16 pixels.
Icon with a transparent background
A square PNG logo with a transparent background uploaded
The same set of PNG icon files, with the transparent background kept at every size.
Transparent edges keep the icon clean in browser tabs, although the apple touch icon may need a solid background.
About Favicon Generator
A favicon is the small icon shown in browser tabs, bookmarks and phone home screens. Different devices ask for different sizes, which makes getting them all right fiddly. Upload one image and this tool creates PNG icons at 16, 32, 48, 180, 192 and 512 pixels, together with a favicon.ico file that contains the 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions. The result covers browser tabs, bookmarks, search results, phone home screens and installed web apps in one go, whatever device your visitors use.
The page also writes the link tags to paste into the head of your pages and the icons entry for a web app manifest. Each file can be downloaded on its own, or all at once. If your picture is not square you can crop to the middle or fit the whole image on a square, and you can choose a solid background, which works best for the Apple home screen icon. Each size is made by shrinking your picture in careful steps, which keeps small icons as sharp as possible.

Frequently asked questions
Which sizes do I need?
For most sites, the 32 and 16 pixel PNGs, a favicon.ico, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and web apps cover everything. This tool creates all of them, plus a 48 pixel version that search engines like.
How is the ICO file made?
The ICO file is assembled from the 16, 32 and 48 pixel PNG images, packed into the standard icon file layout. Modern browsers read PNG data inside ICO files without trouble, and the file keeps older browsers that look for favicon.ico working.
Where do I put the files?
Upload them to the top folder of your website, then paste the link tags into the head section of your pages. If you keep the icons in another folder, change the paths in the tags to match. The manifest entry belongs in your site.webmanifest file.
My logo is not square. What happens?
You can crop to a square from the middle, or choose to fit the whole image on a square with empty space around it. Tick the fill option to use a solid background colour instead of transparency, which suits the Apple home screen icon best.
Why is my favicon not updating?
Browsers keep favicons for a long time. After uploading new files, try a hard refresh, clear the cache, or add a version to the file name. Search engines may take days or weeks to show the new icon in results.
