A column of scores

Score 42 37 42 9 (blank)

Number, filled 4, blank 1, different 3, smallest 9, largest 42, sum 130, mean 32.5, median 39.5

The median of 9, 37, 42, 42 is (37 + 42) / 2 = 39.5.

About CSV Column Statistics

Before you analyse or import a file it pays to know what is in it. This tool reads your CSV and gives one row of facts for every column: whether it holds numbers, dates or text, how many cells are filled and how many are blank, how many different values it has, and the most common value with how often it appears. For columns of numbers it adds the sum, mean, median, smallest, largest and standard deviation. For dates it gives the earliest and latest.

The summary is quick to read and helps you spot problems. A column you expected to be numbers that shows as Text probably has a stray note in one cell. A column where the number of different values equals the number of filled cells is probably an identifier. A column that is mostly blank may not be worth keeping. The summary can be downloaded as a CSV of its own.

How to use CSV Column Statistics

  1. Paste your CSV or open a file.
  2. Set whether dates such as 03/04/2024 start with the day or the month.
  3. Read down the table, one row for each column of your data.
  4. Download the summary if you want to keep it.

Common uses

  • Checking a new data file before you use it
  • Finding columns with missing values
  • Getting quick totals and averages without a spreadsheet
  • Spotting typos through unexpected most common values

Frequently asked questions

How is the type of a column decided?

A column is Number when every filled cell is a number, Date when every filled cell is a date, and Text otherwise. Empty means no cell is filled. Amounts with currency signs, thousands commas and percent signs count as numbers.

Which standard deviation is used?

The sample standard deviation, which divides by one less than the number of values. For the values 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7 and 9 it is about 2.138.

How is the median found?

The values are put in order and the middle one is taken. With an even number of values it is the average of the two middle ones.

Are blank cells counted?

They are counted in the Blank column and left out of every other figure. A cell with only spaces counts as blank.

What do the Smallest and Largest columns show for text?

The length of the shortest and longest value, which is a quick way to find cells that are cut off or hold far too much.
