Common Ports Lookup

Type a port number, a range such as 3000-3400, or a name such as mysql. The list shows the protocol, what the port is used for and whether it is officially assigned.

Checked against the IANA service name and port number registry on 18 October 2026. Rows marked common use are conventions that are not assigned to that service.

Worked examples

One port

443

HTTPS, TCP/UDP, assigned

Web pages with encryption.

A name

postgres

5432, PostgreSQL, TCP

The database default.

A range

About Common Ports Lookup

A port number tells a computer which program should receive a network connection. Web servers listen on 80 and 443, mail uses 25, 587 and 993, SSH uses 22, databases have their own well-known numbers, and many developer tools pick their own by habit. Knowing the number helps when you write a firewall rule, read the output of a scan, or work out why a connection is refused.

This list covers around a hundred ports. Search by number, by a range such as 3000-3400, or by a name or word such as mysql or mail. Every entry was checked against the official IANA service name and port number registry on 18 October 2026. The last column separates ports that IANA assigns to that service from numbers that are only used by convention, such as 3000 for development servers or 9200 for Elasticsearch, so you know which is which.

How to use Common Ports Lookup

  1. Type a port number, a range or a name.
  2. Read the matching rows: port, protocol, service and what it is used for.
  3. Check the last column to see whether the port is assigned or used by convention.
  4. Use the result in your firewall rule, configuration or notes.

Common uses

  • Writing firewall and security group rules
  • Understanding the output of a port scan
  • Choosing a port for a new service that does not clash
  • Working out which service a log line refers to

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between TCP and UDP ports?

They are separate sets of ports. TCP gives a reliable ordered connection and is used by the web and mail. UDP is lighter and is used by DNS lookups, time sync and streaming. A rule for one does not cover the other.

What does assigned mean?

IANA keeps the official registry and has assigned that port number to that service. Common use means people use the number by habit, but the registry gives it to something else or to nothing.

Why does HTTPS list UDP as well?

HTTP/3 runs over QUIC, which uses UDP on the same port number as HTTPS. The protocol column shows both.

Which ports are well known?

Ports 0 to 1023 are the well-known range, 1024 to 49151 are registered, and 49152 to 65535 are dynamic ports used for short-lived outgoing connections.

Can a service use a different port?

Yes. Most services let you change the port in their settings. The list shows the usual default, so confirm against the service's own configuration.
