About Character Name Generator
Writers and game masters need names constantly, and a name should sound as if it belongs to the place it comes from. This generator makes names in eight styles, each built in its own way, so an elf does not end up with a name that sounds like a pirate's. Choose a style, say how many you want and read the list.
Elf, dwarf, orc and fantasy human names are made by joining sounds: a beginning, an optional middle and an ending, with a surname made of two words such as Moon and whisper or Iron and fist. Sci-fi names pair a short invented first name with a surname drawn from around the world. Medieval English names are real names of the period with a trade surname such as Fletcher or Thatcher. Pirates get a nickname, a first name and a surname, and wizards get a title, a name and an epithet such as the Wise. Turn the surname off when you only need a single name.

Frequently asked questions
Are these names from books or films?
No. The word parts were written for this tool and the names are made up by joining them. A name could by chance match a person or a character in a published work, so check before using one in something you publish.
Why do the styles feel different?
Each uses its own sounds. Elf names are soft and long, dwarf names are short and heavy, and orc names are harsh. Surnames are built differently too, so a dwarf might be Iron and fist, while a sci-fi character has a surname from many cultures.
Can I get names with no surname?
Yes. Untick the surname box and you get a single name, which suits creatures, ships and characters who go by one name.
How many different names are possible?
Many thousands for each style. Press Generate repeatedly and you will see few repeats, though some may come up more than once over a long session.
Does it make female and male names?
The names are not tied to gender. Most styles mix sounds that can suit anyone, so you can decide who each name belongs to.
