Exemplos resolvidos

Adding two fractions

1/2 plus 1/3

5/6

The fractions are rewritten over a common bottom number of 6, giving 3/6 plus 2/6, which is 5/6.

Subtracting with different denominators

3/4 minus 1/6

7/12

Both fractions are rewritten over 12, so 9/12 minus 2/12 gives 7/12, which cannot be simplified further.

Sobre Fraction Calculator

A fraction shows part of a whole, written as a top number over a bottom number. Adding and subtracting fractions needs a common bottom number first, while multiplying and dividing follow simpler rules. Many people remember the steps from school but get stuck halfway, or finish with an answer that is not fully simplified. This calculator handles each case, including mixed numbers such as 2 1/4, and shows every step so you can check your own working. It also simplifies results by dividing the top and bottom numbers by their highest common factor, so 6/8 becomes 3/4.

Decimals and fractions are two ways of writing the same amount, so the calculator can also turn a fraction into a decimal and a decimal into a fraction. A decimal that stops, such as 0.125, becomes 1/8 exactly. A decimal that repeats forever, such as 1/3, is shown with its repeating digits in brackets, so 0.(3). Use the steps as a check while you are learning, or copy the final answer when you only need the result for homework, a recipe or a measurement.

Como usar Fraction Calculator

  1. Choose the operation you need, such as add, subtract, multiply or divide.
  2. Enter the first fraction, putting any whole number in the first box for a mixed number.
  3. Enter the second fraction if the operation needs one, or leave it alone for simplifying a single fraction.
  4. Read the answer as a fraction, a mixed number and a decimal, then follow the steps to see how it was reached.

Usos comuns

  • Checking homework on adding fractions with different bottom numbers
  • Scaling a recipe that uses cup or ounce fractions
  • Working out how much of a task is left after part of it is done
  • Turning a decimal measurement into a fraction for a drawing

Perguntas frequentes

How do you add fractions with different bottom numbers?

Find a common bottom number, usually the lowest common multiple of the two bottom numbers, then rewrite both fractions with it. Add the top numbers and keep the bottom number the same. For example, 1/2 plus 1/3 becomes 3/6 plus 2/6, which is 5/6. Simplify the answer afterwards if the top and bottom numbers share a factor.

How do you divide one fraction by another?

Keep the first fraction, turn the second fraction upside down, and multiply. The upside down version is called the reciprocal. For example, 3/4 divided by 1/2 becomes 3/4 multiplied by 2/1, which equals 6/4. Simplify 6/4 to 3/2, or 1 1/2 as a mixed number. Dividing by zero is not possible, so a second fraction with a zero top number is rejected.

How do you change a mixed number into a fraction?

Multiply the whole number by the bottom number, add the top number, and keep the same bottom number. For 2 1/4, multiply 2 by 4 to get 8, add 1 to get 9, and write 9/4. The calculator does this automatically for both fractions, so you can enter mixed numbers directly without converting them first.

How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?

Count the digits after the decimal point. Write the digits as the top number over a bottom number of 1 followed by that many zeros, then simplify. So 0.75 has two digits after the point, which gives 75/100, and dividing both numbers by 25 gives 3/4. Type the decimal into the box and the fraction appears straight away, with a mixed number too if it is larger than one.

What does a bracketed decimal such as 0.(6) mean?

The digits in brackets repeat forever. Since 2/3 is 0.6666 and so on, it is written 0.(6). Some fractions, such as 1/6, which is 0.1(6), have a few digits that do not repeat followed by a repeating group. A fraction whose bottom number has only the factors two and five always gives a decimal that stops.
