How does the word frequency counter count words?
The tool finds groups of letters and numbers, and counts a group as one word when it is separated from the next by a space or punctuation. An apostrophe or hyphen inside a word keeps it together, so don't and well-known each count once. Capital letters are ignored, so The and the are the same word, and the list shows every word in lower case.
What is the share or percentage shown for each word?
The share is the number of times a word appears divided by the total number of words in the whole text, multiplied by 100. The total includes common words even when they are hidden from the list, so each percentage shows how much of the full text that word takes up. The figures are rounded to two decimal places.
What does Ignore common words do?
It removes a standard list of everyday words such as the, a, and, of, is and with from the ranking. These words are very common in any language, so they tend to top the list without telling you much. Turn the option off if you want to see every word, including the small ones, or if you are studying how often grammar words are used.
What is in the CSV file?
The CSV file has three columns: the word, how many times it appears, and its percentage of the whole text. It lists every word in the current view, so if common words are hidden they will not be in the file. It opens in most spreadsheet programs, and the header row helps you sort or filter the columns once it is open.
Why are some words missing from the list?
The most likely reason is that Ignore common words is ticked, which removes everyday words from the ranking. Words are also only counted when they contain letters or numbers, so a lone symbol or a dash on its own is not counted. If a word you expect is missing, check the text for typing errors and make sure the option is set as you intended.
