À propos de ISBN Validator and Converter
This validator checks ISBNs, the numbers printed on books. Paste them one per line, with or without hyphens or spaces, and with or without the letters ISBN in front, and the check digit of each is tested. The message gives the count of numbers that passed, so a long catalogue can be checked at a glance.
Every valid number is shown in its other form too. An ISBN-10 gets its ISBN-13 form by adding 978 at the front and working out a new check digit, and an ISBN-13 that starts 978 gets back its ISBN-10 form. A number that fails is reported with the digit it should end in, which usually points straight at the typing mistake.
The tool checks that a number is correctly formed, which is the useful first test for a spreadsheet of titles or an import file. It does not look anything up, so a pass does not prove that a book exists or tell you its title. Results are shown as plain digits without hyphens, because the hyphen positions depend on the publisher range and are not needed for the check.

Questions fréquentes
How does the check digit work?
For ISBN-10 each digit is multiplied by a weight from 10 down to 2 and the total, plus the check digit, must divide by 11. For ISBN-13 the digits are weighted 1 and 3 in turn and the total must divide by 10.
What does X mean at the end?
In an ISBN-10 the check digit can be ten, which is written as X.
Does every ISBN-13 have an ISBN-10 form?
No. Only those that start with 978 do. Numbers that start with 979 have no ISBN-10 equivalent.
Does a valid ISBN mean the book exists?
No. It only means the number is correctly formed.
What if my number has the wrong length?
An ISBN has 10 or 13 digits once hyphens and spaces are removed. Anything else is marked with that reason rather than being tested.
