What is an aspect ratio?
The relationship between width and height, written as two numbers such as 16:9. A 1920 by 1080 picture is 16:9 because 1920 divided by 120 is 16 and 1080 divided by 120 is 9.
Which ratios are common?
16:9 for video and most monitors, 4:3 for older screens, 3:2 for many cameras, 1:1 for square posts and 9:16 for phone video.
Why is the new size not a whole number?
Proportions rarely give whole pixels. The result is shown to two decimal places, so round to the nearest pixel before you use it.
Why does 1366 by 768 show a strange ratio?
It does not reduce to small numbers, so the exact ratio is 683:384. The nearest common ratio, 16:9, is shown beside it.
