Numbering a five page document

A 5 page PDF with numbers added to every page

The same 5 pages, each with a plain number a short way in from the bottom edge, from 1 to 5.

Numbers are added in a plain sans serif font, so they stay readable on any page.

Leaving the first page unnumbered

A 5 page PDF with the first page left out of the numbering

Page 1 has no number, while pages 2 to 5 carry numbers.

A cover page is often left unnumbered, which is why this option exists.

O narzędziu Add Page Numbers to PDF

Adding page numbers makes a long document easier to refer to, print and discuss. This tool numbers every page of a PDF in the corner or edge you choose, with a format that suits the document, whether that is a plain number, Page 2, Page 2 of 10, 2 / 10 or a number between dashes. A line of example text shows exactly what the result will look like. Pages of different sizes are each numbered at the right distance from their own edge.

You can set the number to start from, which is useful when a file continues from an earlier part, and change the font size to suit the page. Leaving the first page without a number is a common request for reports with a cover, and the first page still counts, so the page after the cover shows 2. Pages that are stored turned are handled too, so the numbers sit on the edge you see. The result is a new file, and the original is left as it was.

Najczęstsze pytania

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Choose your file, pick where the number should sit and which format you want, then select Add page numbers. The tool writes a number on each page and gives you a new file to download. Your original file is not changed, so you can try other settings.

Can I skip the first page?

Yes. Tick the box to leave the first page without a number. The first page still counts, so the second page shows the next number, which suits a cover sheet. If you want the second page to show 1, set the start number to 0 instead.

How does Page 1 of 10 work out the total?

The total is the number of the last page. With a start number of 1 and a ten page document it reads 10. If you start from 5, the last page is 14, so the pages read Page 5 of 14 up to Page 14 of 14, which keeps the numbers consistent.

Can I choose a different font?

The numbers are written in a plain sans serif font so they look the same in every PDF viewer. You can change the size from 6 to 36 points. The colour is a dark grey that reads well on white pages and on most scanned pages.

Will the numbers cover text on my pages?

Numbers sit 28 points from the top or bottom edge and 36 points from the sides, which is clear of the text on most documents. If your page already has a footer, choose a top position, or pick a corner where there is nothing printed.
