Over Keyboard Tester

A keyboard tester helps you check that every key on your keyboard works as it should. Press any key and this page shows its name and its code, and the matching key on the picture lights up while you hold it down. Keys you have pressed stay shaded, so you can see at a glance which ones you have tested and which ones are still waiting for a press. It is a quick way to find a key that sticks, feels unresponsive or does not register at all.

The picture shows a standard layout with letters, numbers, modifier keys, the space bar and the arrow keys. Keys that do not appear on the picture, such as some function keys and the number pad, are still recorded in the list of keys seen, so nothing you press is missed. The key details show the key name, the code the keyboard sends and where the key sits on the keyboard, such as on the left or the right. You can clear the list at any time to start a fresh check.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is the difference between key and code?

The key is the character or name that a key produces, such as a letter, a number or the word Enter. The code is the name the keyboard uses for the physical position of that key, such as KeyA for the A key. The code stays the same even when the layout changes, so it helps when you need to know which physical key was pressed.

Why are some keys not on the picture?

The picture shows the main keys found on a standard keyboard. Function keys across the top, the number pad and some special keys are left out to keep the layout clear. These keys still appear in the list of keys seen, so you can confirm that they respond when you press them.

A key shows nothing when I press it. What should I do?

First click on the page so that it is active, then press the key again. If it still shows nothing, try the key on another keyboard or port to check whether the problem is with the keyboard or the computer. A key that never registers may need cleaning or replacing, depending on the keyboard.

Why do the arrow keys and space bar not scroll the page?

The tester stops the space bar and the arrow keys from moving the page, so that you can press them without the view jumping about. Other keys work as normal, so you can still use the Tab key to move between buttons on the page if you need to.

Does this test work on a phone or tablet?

It needs a physical keyboard, so it will not show key presses on a touch screen alone. You can connect a keyboard to a tablet or phone and use it to test the keys, as long as the device passes the key presses to the page in the usual way.
