Adding VAT to a net price
Net price £100 at the standard 20 per cent rate, add VAT
VAT £20.00 and a total of £120.00.
To add VAT, the net price is multiplied by 1.20, so 100 times 1.20 is 120.
Removing VAT from a total
Total £60 at the reduced 5 per cent rate, remove VAT
Net price £57.14 and VAT £2.86.
To take VAT out, the total is divided by 1.05, which gives £57.14, and the VAT is the difference.
Über VAT Calculator
This VAT calculator adds VAT to a price or takes it back out again, using the UK standard rate of 20%, the reduced rate of 5%, the zero rate or any other rate you type in. Enter one amount and you immediately see the price without VAT, the VAT itself and the price with VAT, rounded to the nearest penny. The calculation is instant and updates as you type, so you can try different rates and amounts without pressing a button.
Use it when you are quoting a customer, checking an invoice, working out the VAT on a receipt or splitting a total into net and tax for your accounts. Choose Add VAT when you know the price before VAT and need the total. Choose Take VAT out when you only know the total, for example from a shop receipt, and need the net price and the VAT amount inside it. A copy button lets you paste the three figures straight into a document.

Häufige Fragen
How do I add 20% VAT to a price?
Multiply the price without VAT by 1.2. For example, £100 plus 20% VAT is £120, made up of the £100 net price and £20 of VAT. The calculator does this for you and shows each part separately, rounded to the nearest penny.
How do I take VAT out of a total?
Divide the total by 1.2 to get the price without VAT at the 20% rate, then subtract to find the VAT. For a total of £120 the net price is £100 and the VAT is £20. Choose Take VAT out and the calculator does the same steps.
What are the UK VAT rates?
The standard rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5% and some goods and services are zero rated. Which one applies depends on what is being sold, so check HMRC guidance or ask an accountant if you are unsure. The custom option covers other rates.
Is zero rated the same as exempt?
No. Zero rated sales are still taxable supplies, charged at 0%, so you can usually reclaim VAT on related costs if you are VAT registered. Exempt supplies are outside the VAT charge and can limit what you can reclaim.
Why is the VAT amount rounded?
Money is handled in whole pence, so the VAT and net amounts are rounded to the nearest penny. On a large invoice with many lines, adding up rounded line amounts can differ by a penny from rounding the total once. This is an estimate only and is not advice.
