Über Pig Latin Translator
This translator turns English into Pig Latin, the playground word game. Type or paste text and each word is changed as you type, with capital letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation left where they were. The message under the result tells you how many words were translated.
The usual rules are used. A word starting with one or more consonants moves them to the end and adds ay, so pig becomes igpay and string becomes ingstray. A word starting with a vowel simply gets way on the end, so apple becomes appleway. Words that start with qu keep the u with the q, so quick becomes ickquay. The letter y counts as a consonant at the start of a word, so yes becomes esyay, and as a vowel after a consonant.
Capitals are carried over sensibly. A capital stays on the first letter of the new word, so Hello becomes Ellohay, and a word written in capitals stays in capitals. Contractions such as don't are treated as one word, and hyphenated words are translated part by part. It translates in one direction only, from English to Pig Latin.

Häufige Fragen
What are the rules of Pig Latin?
Move the starting consonants to the end of the word and add ay. If the word starts with a vowel, add way instead.
What about capital letters?
A capital stays on the first letter of the new word, and words written in capitals stay in capitals.
How is the letter y handled?
At the start of a word it counts as a consonant, so yes becomes esyay. After a consonant it acts as a vowel, so rhythm becomes ythmrhay.
Can I translate Pig Latin back to English?
Not reliably, because the first letters cannot always be told apart from the rest of the word.
Are there different versions of the rules?
Yes. Some people add yay or hay to words starting with a vowel. This tool uses way, which is the most common choice.
