BMI is a general guide for adults aged 18 and over. It does not measure body fat and does not allow for muscle, age, sex or ethnicity, so it can be misleading for some people. This calculator gives information only and is not medical advice. If you have questions about your weight or health, speak to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Über BMI Calculator

Body mass index, or BMI, compares weight with height as a single number. This calculator accepts metric measurements in centimetres and kilograms, or imperial ones in feet, inches, stones and pounds. It shows your BMI to one decimal place, the adult range it falls into and the weight range that matches a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.

BMI is only a rough guide for adults. It does not measure body fat and ignores muscle, age, sex and ethnicity, so it can mislead for some people. The result is information only and is not medical advice. For questions about weight or health, speak to a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. Ranges for children and teenagers work differently and are not covered.

Häufige Fragen

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres, squared. For someone 1.75 metres tall weighing 70 kilograms, the figure is 70 divided by 3.0625, which is about 22.9. If you use stones and pounds or feet and inches, they are converted first.

What are the BMI ranges for adults?

The ranges commonly used for adults are below 18.5 for underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 for the healthy weight range, 25 to 29.9 for overweight and 30 or above for obese. They are general bands for screening and do not describe anyone's health on their own.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so a muscular person may fall in a higher range without carrying extra fat. It also varies in meaning with age, sex and ethnicity. Treat it as one rough number and speak to a health professional for advice.

Can I use stones and pounds?

Yes. Choose imperial units and enter feet and inches for height and stones and pounds for weight. You can leave a box empty if it is zero, such as 0 pounds. The weight range for your height is also shown in stones and pounds.

Does this work for children?

No. This calculator is for adults aged 18 and over. For children and teenagers, BMI is judged against charts that take age and sex into account, so the same ranges do not apply. A doctor or school nurse can give guidance for younger people.
